Zebra ZT610 and ZT620 troubleshooting: alerts, lights and fixes

What the yellow or red screen and the lights on a ZT610 or ZT620 mean, and how to clear Head Open, Media Out, Ribbon Out, wrinkles and faded print.

    When the ZT610 or ZT620 needs attention, the Home screen turns yellow or red and the lights change. Touch the icons in the top bar to read the message. Both models use the same messages and lights.

    STATUS green means ready. PAUSE yellow on its own means the printer is paused: press PAUSE to continue.

    Fixes

    1. Head OpenSTATUS red, PAUSE yellow

    CauseThe printhead is not fully closed, or more rarely the printhead-open sensor is faulty.

    Fix

    1. Open the media door and turn the printhead-open lever down until the printhead locks.
    2. If the message stays with the printhead locked, contact us: the sensor needs service.
    2. Media OutSTATUS red, SUPPLIES red

    CauseLabels have run out or are loaded incorrectly, the media sensor is out of position, or the label type setting does not match the labels.

    Fix

    1. Load a new roll if needed and check the path: under the dancer assembly, through the media sensor, under the printhead, with the labels touching the inside back wall of the sensor.
    2. For notched or punched labels, remove the ribbon and turn the gold sensor adjustment wheel until the green light lines up with the notch or hole.
    3. Check Print › Print Quality › Label Type and run a manual calibration. Details: Calibrate the ZT610 and ZT620.
    3. Ribbon Out or Ribbon InSUPPLIES flashing red or yellow

    CauseRibbon Out: in thermal transfer mode the ribbon is missing, loaded wrongly or not detected, or the printer is set to thermal transfer for direct thermal labels. Ribbon In: a ribbon is loaded in direct thermal mode.

    Fix

    1. Reload the ribbon. Under the printhead it must run as far back as it goes, close to the inner wall of the printer, or the ribbon sensor cannot see it.
    2. Run a manual calibration with labels and ribbon loaded.
    3. Direct thermal labels: set Print › Print Quality › Print Type to Direct Thermal, and the same in your driver. Ribbon In does not stop printing; remove the ribbon, or set Thermal Transfer if your labels need ribbon.
    4. Still Ribbon Out with the ribbon loaded correctly? Use System › Settings › Restore Defaults › Restore Printer. This resets all settings except network settings, so you set your print settings again afterwards.
    4. Ribbon wrinklescreases or fine lines in the print

    CauseUneven printhead pressure, a badly loaded ribbon, the wrong heat setting, or labels moving sideways.

    Fix

    1. Reload the ribbon straight and tight, and check that the media guide touches the edge of the labels.
    2. Look at the direction of the wrinkles. From lower left to upper right: increase the outside toggle pressure or decrease the inside toggle. From upper left to lower right: increase the inside toggle or decrease the outside toggle. In the middle: move both toggles towards the centre of the label.
    3. Lower the darkness or the print speed under Print › Print Quality.
    4. Zebra's printhead pressure and toggle position procedure shows the adjustment. If wrinkles continue, contact us.
    5. Faded or patchy printbarcodes don't scan

    CauseDarkness or speed does not suit the labels and ribbon, the printhead is dirty, or the pressure is uneven.

    Fix

    1. Run Wizards › Print › Start Print and use Print Quality Assistance: pick the best test label and the printer sets darkness and speed.
    2. Or change Print › Print Quality › Darkness (0.0–30.0) in small steps and lower the print speed. Use the lowest darkness that gives a good result, as too much heat blurs barcodes and wears the printhead.
    3. Clean the printhead: with the printer off and the head cool, wipe the brown strip on the printhead from end to end with a swab and 99.7 % isopropyl alcohol, then clean the platen roller while you turn it. Let it dry.
    4. Light on one side only: increase the inside toggle pressure for the left side, the outside toggle for the right side.
    5. Check the coated side of the ribbon and that the print type matches your labels.
    6. Paper Jamlabels stuck in the printer

    CauseLabels are loaded wrongly, stuck to parts of the media path, or wrapped around the platen roller.

    Fix

    1. Switch off, open the printhead and remove the stuck labels.
    2. If labels wrapped around the platen roller, remove them and clean the roller with isopropyl alcohol.
    3. Reload the labels and press PAUSE.
    7. Printhead alertstemperature, maintenance, end of life

    CausePrinthead temperature, dirt, wear, or a non-genuine printhead.

    Fix

    1. Head Over Temp: let it cool. Printing resumes by itself. If it repeats, move the printer to a cooler spot or lower the print speed.
    2. Head Under Temp: keep printing while the head warms up, or move the printer to a warmer place. If it persists, contact us.
    3. Head Maintenance Needed: clean the printhead as in Fix 5.
    4. Head Element Out or Replace Printhead: the printhead is worn or damaged. If print quality suffers, it needs replacing.
    5. STATUS, PAUSE and DATA all red: the printhead is not a genuine Zebra part. Fit a genuine printhead.
    8. Network problemsNETWORK light red or off

    CauseWired: off means no link, red an Ethernet error. Wi-Fi: flashing green means a weak signal, red a wireless error. On printers placed on the EU market from August 2025, Zebra's Protected Mode security setup applies to network settings.

    Fix

    1. Check the cable, then print Connection › Networks › Print: Network Info.
    2. For a fixed address, set Connection › Wired › Wired IP Protocol to PERMANENT, enter the address, subnet and gateway, then touch Connection › Networks › Reset Network.
    3. If the display asks for a front-panel PIN, set it and the Protected Mode password as described in Zebra's Link-OS PrintSecure Printer Administration Guide (zebra.com/asr). With Protected Mode on, Zebra says network settings can't be changed on the display, only with the Protected Mode password via JSON commands.

    Frequently asked questions

    What does a red screen on the Zebra ZT610 mean?

    A red or yellow Home screen means an alert or error, and printing usually stops until you fix it. Touch the icons in the top bar to read the message.

    How do I reset a ZT610 or ZT620 to factory settings?

    Use System › Settings › Restore Defaults › Restore Printer, or hold FEED and PAUSE while you switch the printer on. This keeps the network settings; Restore Network (CANCEL and PAUSE at power-up) resets those.

    How often should I clean the printhead?

    Zebra recommends cleaning it after every ribbon roll with thermal transfer, and after every label roll with direct thermal.
