This guide takes a new Bixolon SRP-E302 from the box to its first printed receipt. It is written for our model SRP-E302K/BEG, the USB version, and also covers the SRP-E302ESK/BEG, which adds Ethernet and RS-232 serial ports.

    You'll need
    • The SRP-E302 with its AC/DC adapter, power cord and USB A-B cable
    • An 80 mm thermal receipt roll, up to 83 mm in diameter
    • A Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC with administrator rights
    • SRP-E302ESK only: a network cable to your router or switch, or a 9-pin serial cable
    • A 24 V printer-driven cash drawer with its drawer cable (optional)

    Before you start

    Check which version you have

Bixolon sells the SRP-E302 in two interface versions. In Bixolon's user manual the plain SRP-E302 has USB only, and the SRP-E302ES has USB, Ethernet and serial. So our SRP-E302K/BEG connects by USB, and the SRP-E302ESK/BEG also by network cable or serial cable.

The SRP-E302 prints at 203 dpi, with 48 characters per line in the standard font.

    Check the box

    Bixolon lists these items:

    • The printer
    • The AC/DC adapter and the power cord
    • A USB A-B cable
    • The installation guide

A serial cable (9-pin to 9-pin) is optional for the ES version. Bixolon does not list a paper roll, so have one ready. Something missing? Contact us.

    Choose a spot

    • Use a flat, level surface with space around the printer for ventilation, and keep the back and bottom clear.
    • Bixolon specifies a top/front paper exit. Keep the paper outlet clear so receipts can come out freely.
    • Avoid damp, dusty, very hot or very cold places. Keep it between 0 and 40 °C and 10 to 80 % relative humidity.

    Connect the power

Bixolon asks you to connect and disconnect cables only while the printer is switched off, otherwise data can be lost.

    1. Make sure the power switch is off.
    2. Plug the adapter's DC plug into the power port of the printer, the right way round.
    3. Plug the power cord into the adapter and then into a wall socket.
    4. Switch the printer on with the power switch. The Power light comes on.

If the Power light stays off, check the light on the adapter. If the adapter light is off too, check the power cord and the socket. Use only the power supply that came with the printer. If the printer makes a strange sound, smells of burning or smokes, switch it off and unplug it at once.

    Load the paper roll

    1. Raise the cover-open lever and open the printer cover. Remove the empty core of the old roll, if there is one.
    2. Place the new roll in the paper compartment. Check the direction: the coated, heat-sensitive side of the paper must face the print head. The loading side is marked on the printer cover, and the manual shows it in a picture.
    3. Pull out a little paper so it sticks out of the outlet.
    4. Close the cover by pressing firmly on its centre, so the roll is held correctly.
    5. Tear off the extra paper at the manual cutter.

Use thermal paper 79.5 ± 0.5 mm wide and 62 to 75 µm thick. Bixolon publishes a list of recommended papers and warns that other paper can damage the print head or lower print quality. Avoid rolls whose paper end is glued to the core: the printer may not detect when the roll is empty. The SRP-E302 takes 80 mm paper only; Bixolon lists no 58 mm option for it.

    Important

The print head gets very hot during printing. Don't touch it, and change the roll only when the printer is not receiving data, or that data can be lost.

    Run a self-test

The self-test checks the printer, paper and cutter without a computer. The printout shows the printer's status, including the firmware (control ROM) version.

    1. Switch the printer off. Check that paper is loaded and the cover is closed.
    2. Hold down FEED and switch the printer on. Release FEED when printing starts.
    3. The printer prints its status, then "SELF-TEST PRINTING." with two choices, and waits. The Error light blinks while it waits.
    4. Press FEED briefly to continue the test print. The printer finishes the test page and cuts the paper.

If you hold FEED for one second or longer instead, the printer opens the memory switch menu ("** VMSM Selection **"). The SRP-E302 has no DIP switches, so this menu is where you change its basic settings:

    Menu item What it does
0 : Exit and reboot printer Saves your changes and restarts the printer
1 : Ethernet Information Setting ES version only (USB version: none)
2 : Set Print Density Darker or lighter print
4 : Set Cutting mode How the autocutter cuts
5 : Set External Buzzer after cutting For an optional external buzzer
8 : Print current settings Prints all current settings

Press FEED as many times as the item number, then hold it for at least one second to select. Your changes are saved only when you run "0 : Exit and reboot printer"; the printer then prints "*** COMPLETED ***" and cuts. If you are not sure, switch the printer off: nothing is changed.

    Install the Windows driver

Bixolon's Windows driver for this printer is the "Software POS Windows Driver". It supports Windows 11, Windows 10 and earlier versions, and Windows Server.

    1. Open the Bixolon download page for the SRP-E300 and SRP-E302 and download the Software POS Windows Driver.
    2. Run the installer with administrator rights and click "Install".
    3. Choose the installation option, select your printer model, SRP-E302, and click "Next".
    4. Choose the connection type that matches your cable: USB, serial (with the COM port of your computer) or network.
    5. Complete the installer with "Next" and "Finish".

The same page has OPOS, JavaPOS, Linux and Mac drivers and the BIXOLON Utility. If your POS software expects a COM port but the printer is on USB, the virtual COM port driver for USB (BXLVCOM4USB) creates one. Your POS software supplier will tell you which driver it needs.

Connect the printer to the computer

    USB (all versions)

    1. With the printer off, connect the USB A-B cable to the printer and to the computer.
    2. Switch on the printer. Windows uses the Bixolon driver you installed.

    Serial (SRP-E302ESK)

    1. With the printer off, connect a 9-pin serial cable and tighten the connector screws.
    2. Switch on the printer.
    3. Set the same baud rate, parity and handshaking in the driver or POS software as in the printer. Bixolon's manual does not list the default serial values; if your POS software needs them, contact us.

    Set up the network (SRP-E302ESK)

Skip this step on the USB version. The ES version has a 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet port. From the factory it gets its IP address automatically from your router (DHCP) and prints on port 9100.

    1. With the printer off, connect a network cable from the Ethernet port to your router or switch. Switch the printer on and wait until it has started.
    2. Open the printer cover, hold FEED for about five seconds, then close the cover. The printer prints the "Checking Interface Setting" menu.
    3. Press FEED once briefly, then hold it for more than one second to choose "1: LAN Information Print".
    4. The printout shows the MAC address, IP address, subnet mask, gateway, port and DHCP mode. If no IP address is printed, the printer has not received one: check the cable and the router.

A POS printer should keep the same address. Ask whoever manages your network to reserve this IP address for the printer's MAC address in the router. In the Windows driver installer, choose the network connection, click "Add TCP/IP Port" and enter the IP address and port 9100.

    Note

Option "2: LAN Factory Reset and Reboot Printer" in the same menu returns the network settings to the factory values. Use it only if you have lost the printer's network settings.

    Connect a cash drawer (optional)

Plug the drawer cable into the drawer kick-out port of the printer. The port drives the drawer with 24 V. Use a drawer with a coil resistance of at least 24 Ω (maximum 1 A), never connect a telephone line to this port and don't use it to power other devices. Two drawers can share the port with a Y-type cable. You choose when the drawer opens in your POS software or the printer driver.

    Print a test receipt

    1. On Windows 11, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners and select the SRP-E302.
    2. Open the printer properties and click "Print Test Page". It prints as a receipt.
    3. Print a receipt from your POS software to check the layout, the cut and the drawer.
