This guide covers both scanners of the Honeywell Voyager XP 147X series. The corded 1470g works as soon as you plug it into a USB port. The cordless 1472g needs a charge and a link to its charge and communication base, or a direct Bluetooth connection to a PC, tablet or phone. Follow the steps for your model, then test a scan.

    You'll need
    • A Voyager 1470g with its USB cable, or a Voyager 1472g with the CCB01-010BT-V1N base and its USB cable
    • A PC with a free USB port (Windows, macOS or another host that accepts a USB keyboard)
    • Optional for the 1472g: a Honeywell 5.2 V, 1 A power supply for the base, for faster charging
    • For a direct Bluetooth link: a PC, tablet or phone with Bluetooth
    • The Voyager XP 1470g Quick Start Guide or the Voyager XP 1472g Quick Start Guide for the basic programming bar codes

    Before you start

Out of the box both models act as a USB keyboard (Honeywell calls this USB PC Keyboard). Whatever you scan is typed where the cursor is, so you need no driver or special software. Honeywell lists our 1470G2D-2USB-EU as a USB kit with the black 2D scanner; the version with a stand has a different part number.

The "2D" in the model number matters. Honeywell states that only the 1470g2D and 1472g2D read PDF417 and 2D codes such as QR codes. The 1D versions read linear bar codes only.

You change settings by scanning programming bar codes. The common ones are in the Quick Start Guides. The full set, including all keyboard countries, is in the Voyager 147X Series User Guide on Honeywell's product page; Honeywell may ask you to sign in before you can download it. In the User Guide, an asterisk (*) marks the default setting.

    Connect the 1470g by USB

    1. Honeywell recommends switching the computer off before you connect the scanner and switching it on again afterwards.
    2. Push the cable's modular connector into the opening in the scanner handle until it clicks. It fits only one way round.
    3. Plug the USB connector into the PC.
    4. The scanner beeps when it powers up. Windows uses its built-in keyboard driver, so no installation is needed.

The PC powers the scanner over USB. To remove the cable later, Honeywell describes pushing a straightened paper clip into the small release hole on the back of the handle while you pull the connector out.

    Test a scan

    1. Open Notepad or another empty text field and click into it.
    2. Aim the red aiming dot at the middle of a bar code and pull the trigger.
    3. A single beep and a green light mean a good read. The data appears as typed text.

Hold the scanner closer to small bar codes and further from large ones. Glossy or laminated labels read better if you tilt the scanner slightly.

    Check two things now:

    • Enter after the scan. Depending on how the scanner was configured, it may or may not press Enter after each bar code. To add or remove Enter or Tab, see our keyboard country and suffix guide.
    • Wrong letters or symbols. The scanner assumes a US keyboard. If your PC uses an Estonian, Finnish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish or Czech layout, set the matching keyboard country, described in the same guide.

    Video: Honeywell

This is Honeywell's general video on connecting a Honeywell scanner to a PC as a USB keyboard. It does not name a scanner model, so the scanner and bar codes shown may differ from the Voyager. Follow the steps in this guide for your Voyager.

    Charge the 1472g

The battery sits in the scanner handle. Honeywell ships it 30 to 60 percent charged and recommends charging it for at least 4 hours before first use.

    1. Connect the base to the PC (next step) and, if you have one, plug the power supply into the base's auxiliary power port.
    2. Place the scanner in the base.
    3. The green light on the base flashes slowly while the battery charges and stays on when it is full.

Honeywell's data sheet quotes a full charge in about 7 hours from the USB cable and about 4 hours with an external 5 V, 1 A adapter. Charge between 5 and 40 °C. A fast-flashing green light means a charging error: see our troubleshooting guide.

Connect the base and link the 1472g

This is the standard setup. The scanner talks to the base by Bluetooth, and the base passes the data to the PC over USB.

    1. Switch the computer off, as Honeywell recommends.
    2. Plug the USB cable into the base. Route the cables through the channels under the base and stand the base flat on a level surface.
    3. Connect the cable to the PC and switch the PC on. The red light on the base lights steadily when it has power and is idle.
    4. Place the scanner in the base. The first time, scanner and base each give a short chirp when the link is made. A scanner that was linked to this base before gives no signal.
    5. Scan a test bar code into Notepad. One beep and a green light mean the scanner is linked. An error tone (a "razz") with a red light means it is not linked: place it in the base again.

While the scanner is linked, the base stores its settings. Always link the scanner before you scan programming bar codes, or the settings may not stay.

    One scanner per base

By default the base is in Open Link Mode: the last scanner you place in it becomes the linked scanner and the previous one is unlinked. To stop a colleague's scanner from taking over the base, scan Locked Link Mode (Single Scanner) from the 1472g Quick Start Guide. A different scanner placed in a locked base only charges. To replace a lost or broken scanner, scan Override Locked Scanner with the new one and place it in the base. Unlink Scanner removes the current link.

Or connect the 1472g directly by Bluetooth

Without the base as a receiver, the 1472g can pair with a PC, tablet or phone as a Bluetooth keyboard (HID). The base can still charge it.

    1. Scan Bluetooth HID Keyboard Connect from the User Guide, chapter "Cordless System Operation".
    2. On the PC, tablet or phone, open the Bluetooth settings and search for new devices.
    3. Select the scanner when it appears in the list.
    4. If the device shows a PIN, scan Bluetooth PIN Code, the PIN digits and Save from the same section within 60 seconds. Many devices pair without a PIN.
    5. Open a text field, for example Notes on an iPad, and test a scan.

On an iPad or phone, a quick double pull of the trigger shows or hides the on-screen keyboard. To use the base again, scan Bluetooth HID Keyboard Disconnect, then link the scanner to the base again.

Range and what happens out of range

Honeywell's data sheet quotes up to 100 m line of sight between the 1472g and a Honeywell base. The User Guide and accessories guide list a typical range of 10 m for the CCB01-010BT-V1N base. Plan for the shorter figure in a shop or warehouse, where shelving and walls reduce the range.

    • Out of range, a scan gives an error tone and the data is not sent. Check whether it reached the PC and scan again when you are back in range.
    • When the scanner comes back in range, it links again by itself and gives a single chirp.
    • After one hour without a trigger pull, the scanner switches off to save power (default setting), unless it is charging in the base. Pull the trigger to wake it. It needs a few seconds to link again.

Two optional settings in the User Guide help larger sites. Base Alarm Duration and Scanner Alarm Duration sound an alarm when the scanner leaves the range; both are off by default. Batch mode stores bar codes scanned out of range and sends them later.

    Fine-tune with EZConfig

For more than a few settings, use Honeywell's EZConfig for Scanning (now offered as EZConfig Cloud for Scanning, with free registration on Honeywell's software download site). It lets you:

    • change settings on a scanner connected to your PC
    • save a configuration and load it into further scanners
    • create one programming bar code that holds all your settings
    • update the scanner firmware

For the 1472g, connect through the base and make sure the scanner is linked first.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the Honeywell Voyager 1470g need a driver?

No. In its default USB PC Keyboard mode it uses the keyboard driver built into Windows, macOS and other systems.

How do I link the Voyager 1472g to its base?

Connect the base to the PC, then place the scanner in the base. Both give a short chirp the first time they link.

Can I use the Voyager 1472g with an iPad or Android phone?

Yes. Scan Bluetooth HID Keyboard Connect from the User Guide and select the scanner in the device's Bluetooth settings. It then types into any app that accepts keyboard input.
