Zebra ZD611 setup guide: labels, calibration, driver

This guide takes a new Zebra ZD611d from the box to a calibrated first label and a working connection to your PC. The ZD611d is Zebra's 2-inch direct thermal printer in the ZD600 series: no ribbon, five status lights, a power button and three control buttons. Notes for the ZD611t are included where it differs.

Before you start

Check the box

You get the printer, the power supply with its power cord, a USB cable and the printed guides. Labels are not included. A ZD611t also comes with an empty 12.7 mm ribbon take-up core.

Choose a good spot

• A firm, level surface with free space on all sides for cooling. Don't put padding under or around the printer.
• Close to a power socket, with data cables kept away from power cords, fluorescent lights and motors.
• A room between 0 and 40 °C with 20–85 % relative humidity, non-condensing.

Know your version

Not sure if your labels are direct thermal? Scratch the print side quickly with a fingernail. A black mark means direct thermal; no mark means the labels need a ribbon and won't print on a ZD611d.

Load the labels

Plug the power supply into the printer, the power cord into the power supply and the cord into a wall socket. The printer may switch itself on when it gets power; that is normal.

1. Slide the two release latches forward and lift the cover.
2. Pull the roll holders apart and put the roll between them, with the print side facing up as it runs to the front. The roll must turn freely and must not sit on the bottom of the media compartment.
3. Pull the end of the labels out past the front of the printer.
4. Push the labels under both media guides.
5. Flip the labels up to see the movable media sensor. For gap labels and continuous receipt paper, leave it in the default (centre) position. For labels with a black mark or notch on the back, move the sensor arrow to the middle of the mark.
6. Cutter models: guide the labels through the cutter slot and out of the front.
7. Close the cover and press down until it snaps shut.

ZD611t: load the 74 m ribbon on the ribbon spindles now, with the ink on the outside of the roll and a matching 12.7 mm take-up core. The ribbon must be wider than the labels.

Switch on and calibrate

1. Press POWER if the printer is off. The lights flash while it checks itself.
2. Wait until the STATUS light is steady green.
3. Press and hold PAUSE + CANCEL for 2 seconds, then let go.
4. The printer feeds a few labels while it measures them (SmartCal). Don't interrupt it. When STATUS is steady green again, calibration is done.

For a new roll of the same labels, press FEED once or twice instead of calibrating again. Run SmartCal again only when you change to a different label type. If labels still skip, use the manual calibration in our ZD611 troubleshooting guide.

Print a configuration report

Zebra recommends this test before you connect a computer. With STATUS steady green, hold FEED + CANCEL for 2 seconds. Check the report:

• The model and print resolution (203 or 300 dpi) at the top. The driver installer asks for both.
• The serial number, printed at the top.
• The network settings and IP address, once the printer is connected to your network.

Nothing prints, or the print is very faint? Check that the labels are direct thermal and face up towards the printhead.

Install the driver, then connect

Switch the printer off and connect the cable only when the installer tells you to. If Windows finds the printer before the driver is installed, it shows up as an unknown or "Unspecified device".

1. Download the Windows driver from the Zebra ZD611 support page, or via zebra.com/drivers.
2. Run it with administrator rights and keep Run the Printer Installation Wizard ticked.
3. Choose Install Printer Driver, accept the licence and pick the port: USB, network (Ethernet or Wi-Fi), Bluetooth, or a serial (COM) port.
4. Select the ZD611 at the resolution shown on your configuration report.

USB

Connect the USB cable when the installer asks for it, then switch the printer on. Windows completes the installation. The second USB port, USB host, is for firmware updates and input devices, not for the PC.

Ethernet

Zebra's ZD600 spec sheet lists Ethernet as standard on every ZD611; the ZD611D user guide lists it as a factory-fitted or add-on option. If your printer has the Ethernet (RJ-45) socket, connect it to your network with a CAT-5 or better cable. The NETWORK light turns green for a 100 Mbit/s link or amber for a 10 Mbit/s link. Print the configuration report again to read the IP address, then choose the network port in the installer. The built-in print server also has its own web pages, which you open with that IP address in a browser.

Serial, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

These are options. Serial is a module for the connectivity slot, fitted at the factory or added later without tools. Switch the printer off and unplug the power and all cables before you open the module door.

• Serial (RS-232): use a null-modem cable, not an adapter dongle. The printer's defaults are 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit and XON/XOFF.
• Wi-Fi with Bluetooth: Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth 5.3, or Wi-Fi 5 with Bluetooth 4.2, each factory-fitted or added later. Set it up with Zebra Setup Utilities on Windows or with Zebra's printer setup app on a phone.

Print your first label

1. In Windows, open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners, select the ZDesigner ZD611 printer and print a test page.
2. Under Printing preferences, set the label width and height of the labels you loaded and choose direct thermal as the print method.
3. Print a label from your label software. Start with the default darkness and speed; the driver settings can override the printer's own.
